Why I Built LiftPath
Me on stage, terrified (I turn 50 this year)
FROM COUCH POTATO TO STAGE
I went from couch potato to standing on stage at the SixPax Super Show Bodybuilding
Competition in 18 months. But the beginning was brutal.
The problem wasn't effort—it was perception. I was training consistently, but when I
looked in the mirror, I saw nothing changing. Friends and trainers would say "you're
making progress," but I didn't believe them. The daily and weekly changes were too small
for me to see. I was stuck in a mental trap: working hard but convinced I was failing.
That's when I realized I needed data, not just discipline. I started tracking
everything—every rep, every set, every pound lifted. The numbers didn't lie. When the
mirror showed me the same person, the data showed progressive overload. Volume was
increasing. PRs were falling. The transformation was happening; I just couldn't see it
yet.
I built LiftPath during this journey because I needed objective proof of progress. Every
feature, every screen, every data point was designed and coded by me—a solo developer
who needed this tool to exist. I tested it on myself throughout my entire
transformation, refining it based on real training sessions, real struggles, and real
breakthroughs. The app helped me and my coaches identify what was working, where I was
actually progressing, and where adjustments were needed. Tracking turned frustration
into focus. Data turned doubt into determination.
After years of development, refinement, and standing on that stage, I know this approach
works. LiftPath is now ready to help others break through the same mental barriers I
faced.
No subscriptions, no ads, no hidden costs—just a tool to help you reach your fitness
goals with your coach or training approach.
How to Get Started?
💡 Working with a Coach
Coaches are not free. But you don't need a full-time personal trainer to get you started. I'd
recommend getting online guidance from a PT. Once-a-month visits are relatively inexpensive, and
the LiftPath app exports data so your coach can make educated decisions about your programming
and progress.
🏋️ Brand New to Weight Training?
If you are brand new to weight training, then you need in-person help. No way around
it.
Join a gym for a short time to get the basics and correct form, and then when you feel
confident, you can go on your own. Proper form is essential for both safety and results—it's
worth the investment to learn it right from the start.
📊 Using LiftPath with Your Approach
Whether you're working with a coach, following a program, or training independently, LiftPath
gives you the data to track your progress objectively. Export your workout history to share with
trainers, analyze your own trends, or simply have proof that you're moving forward—even when the
mirror doesn't show it yet.
My Approach After Years of Training
🤖 The Secret Sauce: I Use AI
I already know what you're going to say, but hear me out. There is so much fitness and training
information available that AI engines have become pretty good at programming. They're
conservative (I think overly conservative) in their approaches to training, but that's actually
a good thing—especially for injury prevention and sustainable progress.
This is why I built the JSON data export format.
The JSON export contains everything an AI needs to make informed recommendations:
Complete gym history (every workout, every set, every rep)
Nutrition information
Cardio and martial arts history (in my case)
Biometrics: weight, body fat percentage, blood pressure, sleep data, and more
Your profile details: current goals, available gym equipment, types of isometric strength
training you do, and lifestyle factors (like sitting at a computer screen and working at a
laboratory bench all day...)
I regularly update my profile in the 'More' tab so the AI has current context about my goals,
equipment access, training preferences, and daily activities. This helps it make recommendations
that actually fit my life, not generic advice.
💬 How It Works
I have a conversation with AI about what I want to accomplish, how much time I want to spend in
the gym, any injuries or limitations, and my current goals. With all my historical data, it
gives me solid, personalized workout recommendations. Even better, the JSON file includes
instructions for the AI tool to create properly formatted templates that I can import directly
back into LiftPath for the next month of training.
🛠️ My Complete Tech Stack
LiftPath: Workout tracking and data export
MacroFactor: Food logging and nutrition tracking
Garmin: Watch, scale, and BP monitor for biometrics
AI Tools: Programming and workout design based on my complete data
This data-driven approach takes the guesswork out of programming. Instead of wondering if I'm
doing the right thing, I have objective evidence and intelligent recommendations based on my
actual performance and recovery.
🚀 Actively Developed & Improving
I've decided to polish this app so it doesn't look like I coded it in my garage :) and I've
tried to make it as bug-free as possible. But stay with me—I'm still working on it and adding
features!
Have an idea? If there's a feature you think will benefit you,
let me know! This app exists because I needed it, and it gets better when I hear what other lifters need
too.
